about

in Steel for alto saxophone and percussion was commissioned by Becky Morris and Joshua Priest, both graduate students at the University of Colorado - Boulder. The piece is the product on many discussions with Becky about wanting a piece for saxophone and vibraphone. Becky had recently heard my vibraphone trio In My Mother’s Garden and contacted me for a work using vibraphone and her instrument, alto saxophone, for her master’s recital. The piece is a far departure from the music I have recently been writing. Instead of small cells of pitch material, I instead used modes in order to construct the melodic and harmonic fabric of the piece. Using these large sets of pitch material I did not have the transformative freedom of pitch material I usually employ. Instead, the materials change slowly by adding new pitches and altering existing pitches. The material bends and twists. It was this concept that brought to mind metal sculptures and the small cards next to a work of art in which it states the title and the medium.
