about

Variations for Piano was my first serious piece for piano solo. The theme is an eight bar phrase of dyads. The only intervals used are major sevenths and minor ninths with a tritone at the cadence point. As I continued working with the theme, these intervals began to sound like consonances rather than dissonances despite their arresting quality on the first hearing. Most of the harmonies are derived from octatonic scales and many of the variations treat the piano as more of a percussive instrument rather than utilizing its lyrical qualities. Variations for Piano has served as a compositional turning point in my understanding and use of dissonance.
